Inventory. The all mighty hand controlling this small 7x7 Real Estate market Whats the deal? Why does it continue to remain such a tough egg to crack. I mean really guys, don't you think its time to let others enjoy this wonderful place. You've had it long enough. Just list your property and go buy that dream home in the wine country.
I'm laughing as I write this.
On a serious note. Not too long ago I was out front with my neighbor and he was telling me how a house sold across the street a few years back for over a million in cash. He was laughing as if that was an absurd amount to pay. I asked him how much he had paid to buy his home and he smiles and told me around $400K. That's amazing I said considering current value of his home is now well over $1.3M. Not a bad investment. As a Realtor I had to let him know that if he ever wanted to sell his property I have buyers ready to purchase.
In his words: "Where would I go?" "I love this city"
That had me thinking this morning. I woke up and did my normal workout routine and while jogging back to my house I passed his and thought, wow, this man has it made. His home is paid off and he is enjoying his golden years relaxing in a city that is full of great food, entertainment and a short drive to the best wine country on this continent. Really where else would he go?
When I got home I decided to look up some fact on baby boomers and found this fun one sheet that was just release a few weeks ago by C.A.R. (California Association of Realtors)
While retirement is an entirely different monster of 401Ks, Pensions and investment strategy that we could talk about for hours. I found the numbers incredible. 78% Say they like their home. Huh? that's funny your telling me you like the one investment that you have put all your hard earned cash into (enough with the sarcasm I know). 59% do not plan on selling their home when they retire.
59%!
For me this is a generational thing. Most baby boomers thought long and hard about where they wanted to end up. Many traveled and many got that job they always wanted. Many also had no choice and wound up stuck in the same town they grew up in. I have found when you take these people out of that town all they want to do is rave about it.
"you can take the kid out of..... but you can't take the... out of the kid."
So what does this have to do with San Francisco? With as young as San Francisco is we are also a city filled with culture and history. Every block has that guy or gal that's never going to leave. Die hard San Franciscans.
The way I see it that guy across the street that my neighbor and I were talking about got a deal. Because no matter how many high rises you try and build there will never be enough. Its only 7x7 and there is nothing but love for this city!
